Tim Webb's
"books about beer"

Tim produces the don't-enter-Belgium-without Good Beer Guide Belgium. John White, of White Beer Travels, contributes to this guide. Click here for more information on the guide. Tim's guide - the fifth edition came out in May, 2005 - can be purchased from his site, and from CAMRA, from www.amazon.co.uk, or from  www.amazon.com. Tim, in collaboration with my fellow Beer Hunt organiser, Chris (Podge) Pollard, produced a May, 2004 book entitled LambicLand LambikLand, which covers Lambic Bars, Breweries and Blenders, including how to get to them. Clearly, one should not venture into the Payottenland, in the Belgian Province of Flemish Brabant (Vlaams-Brabant), without it. LambicLand LambikLand was the first book published by Tim's Cogan & Mater company; Tim's site was set up for this venture. LambicLand LambikLand can be purchased from the site. Click here for a White Beer Travels Web page covering LambicLand LambikLand and Around Bruges in 80 Beers, the latter being co-authored by Podge and his partner, Siobhan McGinn. In de Verzekering Tegen de Grote Dorst

This superb pub, "Insurance Against The Big Thirst", in Lennik/Eizeringen, Belgium, promotes the beers for which the area in which it is to be found is world famous, i.e. the Pajottenland, an area to the South and South West of Brussels. This is renowned in the Speciality Beer world for the production of an ancient beer style: Lambic and its derivatives - Gueuze/Geuze and Fruit Beers. Lambic is a spontaneously fermented beer.

Bamberg - die wahre Hauptstadt des Bieres

In English, the title of this magnificent German-language, September, 2004 book is "Bamberg - Truly the Beer Capital", this being true. It is by Dr Christian Fiedler, who published it himself (216 pages (220x235mm), ISBN 3-00-013723-8). It features the seventy-three breweries, past and present, that have operated in the city since 1817. It is lavishly illustrated with photos and document reproductions for all the breweries featured, accompanied by superb maps pinpointing them; I can't wait to return to Bamberg with the book and match the photos of the lost breweries to their present uses. Christian assembled all the illustrations himself, and laid them out amongst his text, i.e. he has done far more the job of a mere author: the book is a labour of love that shines through from every page. Details of how to get a copy of this essential book are to be found on the book's website. A more detailed White Beer Travels review of the book can be seen by clicking here. The city currently has ten official breweries, these being covered in the White Beer Travels guide to Bamberg, which can be reached by clicking here. Note that a second edition of the book was published in April, 2005. It has twelve extra pages; the new edition additionally covers the Bamberg suburbs of Gaustadt und Bug.

The Zythos Beer Festival replaces OBP's Antwerp 24 Hour Festival, which was for me, one of the world's best beer festivals, if it is beer quality that matters. The first Zythos Festival, which took place in March, 2004, was a very worthy successor. For the White Beer Travels Web page covering Zythos and the ZBF, click here. Dranken Geers

This is a truly excellent Beer Warehouse in Oostakker (Ledergemstraat 7, tel 09 251 05 83), which is near Ghent, in Belgium. It has over 500 Belgian Beers and a good selection from other countries, such as Schlenkerla Rauchbier (Smoke Beer), which is brewed by the Brauerei Heller, in Bamberg, in Germany, White Beer Travels Web page, the latter having a photo featuring crates of Schlenkerla in Dranken Geers). All the beers are very reasonable priced. Dranken Geers is easily reached, being just off the North bound leg of the Ghent ring road (R4) (GPS: 51.100420o N, 3.761073o E).

Kuaska

Lorenzo Dabove is Italy's most famous Beer Hunter. Lorenzo is known not only as "The Prince of the Payottenland" (prins van het Pajottenland), such is his love of the place, but also as Kuaska, hence the name of his website. Kuaska is a poetical character, which requires the donning of a pair of very large ears! With these on, Kuaska usually plays a nose flute!

Lorenzo/Kuaska's support and enthusiasm for beers from the Pajottenland and the rest of Belgium is known to all followers of Speciality/Craft/Specialty Beer, but it is also recognised at ministerial level in Belgium. At a March, 2004 event to support the beers for which Brussels and the neighbouring Pajottenland is justly famous, but which are under threat, one of the attendees was Herman De Croo, the Chairman of the Belgian Federal Parliament and Minister of State. After the event, he wrote to the organiser, about Kuaska, who made a speech at the event, as follows: " ... I have already seen many things in my life, but the fact that a very skilled Italian beer connoisseur praises the beers of the Pajottenland in English to beer lovers from London and Washington, is unique ... ". The event was held in a superb pub in the Pajottenland, In De Verzekering Tegen De Grote Dorst (White Beer Travels Web page).

I am privileged to count Kuaska as a good friend, and not just a beer acquaintance, and not because of the praise heaped on me to the right! A Tutta Birra
(All The Beers)

This is the site for a Beer Shop, in Milan, Italy. However, it offers far more than just information on its products, such as much on Belgian Beer and it is unquestionably one of the best source of info on Speciality Beer in Italy. It has some English pages. The irrepressible (Kuaska, see above, is very much involved with the site. He tells me that "A Tutta Birra" usually means "Runs Faster", and that this expression is derived from the fact that British race horse trainers once gave beer to their charges to make them run faster. The shop does not have "All The Beers" ("tutta" being the feminine form of "all"), but over 500, with many rarities, from Belgium, the UK, The Netherlands and Italy, etc. Further information on A Tutta Birra can be found on the White Beer Travels Web page featuring Italy, which can be reached by clicking here.

This is a really good resource; if one clicks on one of the bottles on the map, one is provided with info, with photos, of Speciality Beer bars in the location in question. Filip can also build you a multi-lingual website, see for example the marvellous ones he has done for: Dickie's Beer- & Grillhouse, an excellent Specialty Beer bar and restaurant, in Bruges; the great cellar bar, De Zolder, the next entry; Kroegske, in Emelgem (www.kroegske.be, White Beer Travels Web page), one of the world's greatest Speciality Beer bars; the one for Brugse Autonome Bierproevers (BAB) (Bruges Autonomous Beer Tasters) (www.babbierproevers.be) the Bruges branch of Zythos; and the one for BAB's annual beer festival, in Bruges, www.brugsbierfestival.be. Oslo Pubs

Norway does not have a great reputation for beer, but is a great place to visit. With John Green's site, you will not want for a beer, should you head for Oslo, the capital. There are also sections on pubs in other locations and general information on Oslo, including recommendations on how to get there.

L3xicon.com

This is an excellent Web-based Thesaurus and Lexicon, created by Arthur Chirinian, which I can highly recommend on a general basis, i.e. not just for beer! If one has a site, one can submit three keywords, which your site will then be found under, see the examples to the right. But L3xicon.com offers far more than this: have a look!

World Pub Guide
by John & Stuart

This excellent site, which is administered by Englishman, John Amer, has tons of information on Specialty Beer bars around the world, with photos of many of them. It is especially good on John's home city, London, and on Amsterdam, in The Netherlands. Like all the places covered, some top-class pubs are rated (out of ten) and detailed. Many are not to be found in the more well-known guides. Stuart, is Stuart Pryer, who has a great site covering the pubs of Cornwall, appropriately entitled "Cornish Pubs - The Definitive Guide", www.pryer.freeserve.co.uk.
